🎲 Randomizer
🎮 What is a Randomizer?
A randomizer is a video game modification that randomly rearranges the location of items, skills, or other game elements. This mechanic creates a unique experience with each playthrough, transforming games you know by heart into completely new challenges.
Imagine playing your favorite game, but this time, the legendary sword is in an unexpected chest, and the dungeon key is hidden on the other side of the world. That's the magic of randomizers: rediscovering classics from a completely different angle.
Randomizers are particularly popular for classic RPGs, adventure games, and Metroidvanias. They add a dimension of thinking and routing (path planning) that captivates speedrunners and competitive players worldwide.
📖 Glossary
The words you will meet in races and tournaments.
- Seed
- One shuffled version of a game, generated from a number. Players on the same seed find every item in the same place.
- Hash
- A short code of icons shown at the start of the game, to check that everyone plays the same seed.
- Race
- Players start the same seed at the same time and the first to finish wins. Races are run on racetime.gg.
- Goal / ruleset
- The rules of a race: the settings of the seed, the tricks allowed and what ends the run.
- Async
- A race played separately: each player runs the seed alone and the times are compared afterwards.
- Tracker
- A tool to note the items found and the places already checked during a run.
- Logic
- The randomizer makes sure the seed can be finished. In glitchless logic, no glitch is ever required.
- Multiworld / Archipelago
- Several players, sometimes on different games, share their items: yours can turn up in someone else's game.
- Bracket
- The tournament chart: who faces whom, round after round, up to the final.
- Qualifiers
- Races before a tournament that decide who takes part and how players are seeded.
- Restream / VOD
- A restream broadcasts a match with commentary; a VOD is its recording. Turn on No spoilers before watching one.
